“a National Historic Landmark”
A walk down the three quarter mile paved loop trail will take visitors past each of the six mounds in the pre-historic complex. These mounds include Temple, Burial and Midden Area Mounds. A beautiful view of the Crystal River is had from the observation deck located on the main Temple Mound. The use of marker stones (limerock boulders), unusual in North America may have served as ceremonial or celestral markers for these ancient river dwellers. The park's Visitor Center exhibits artifacts from the site, provides comparisions with other areas and explains some of the technologies the early residents employed. A short video and outdoor audio stations explain some of the features of the archaeolgical site. This park is also a Great Florida Birding Trail of Citrus County. The complex is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
