“cheetahs, camels, meerkats & monkeys”
Nestled along the shores of Lake Decatur, Scovill Zoo is home to more than 500 animals spanning six continents. Animal lovers of all ages can visit South African cheetahs, an Australian wallaby, and golden lion tamarins from Brazil, to name just a few. Originally called Scovill Farm, the zoo was built by Park District staff in 1966 and opened to the public in 1967. The Kiwanis Club donated $14,000 for the construction of the farm, which housed pigs, ducks, chickens, and goats. Today, the zoo is home to hundreds of animals and is proudly accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Visitors enjoy unique zoo attractions, like the Z.O. & O. Express Train, Endangered Species Carousel, and community-built Project Playground II. Educational animal experiences continue to grow at Scovill Zoo, with Animal Crackers classes for youngsters aged 3 – 5, overnight camp-outs for Scout and church groups, and summer camps for youth of ages. A Zoo Teens classes for those interested in pursuing zoo careers was added in 2011.
