Even if your ancestors didn't come from Norway, this nice little museum is well worth a couple hours if you happen to be in the area. First Thursdays of the month are free days. It's best if you can time your visit around the daily Open Air Tour (times vary, so call ahead). This gets you into the various buildings on the site (pioneer cabins, shops, an old mill, a church, etc.) that really let you see how the first settlers in this area lived.
Decorah's Vesterheim Museum is a true gem! With lots of different exhibits and areas to explore, this local museum gives a wonderful look into Nordic traditions both past and present.
As a former norwegian, I have to say this place is well worth the stop, very impressive collection and very educational.
