“A Perfect Place for Water sports and Camping!”

The 2,700-acre, man-made lake that is the center piece for Poverty Point Reservoir State Park offers visitors an outlet for a variety of watersport activities and a scenic backdrop for waterfowl migration each spring and fall. The fish and wildlife species inhabiting or migrating through the reservoir are numerous. Anglers can fish the lake year round for largemouth bass, black crappie, blue gill and channel catfish. The region falls within the Mississippi Flyway for many winged species. Depending on the season, visitors will see cormorants, ducks, geese and pelicans. Overnight guests can choose from two-bedroom waterfront cabins, spacious lodges with loft bedrooms, or RV camping. A water playground in the campground area provides a place for our younger visitors to beat the heat. A nature trail winds along a off-shoot of Bayou Macon. Special attention should be given to any Louisiana black bear sightings on or near the reservoir. The eastern edge of the park, along Bayou Macon, contains attractive bear habitat and visitors are cautioned to keep all exterior cabin areas and day-use areas cleared of accessible food products and refuse. Bear-proof containers are provided for waste disposal throughout the park.

We planned on staying longer but left after just one night. Now, it's not that bad, depending on what you are looking for. The sites are sufficiently big, though the pads are pretty beaten and there is not much room other than for the rig. We came in late and since we couldn't find the camp hosts or ranger we just parked in one spot and paid in the morning. Apparently we scored a premium site (waterfront), which cost $2 more. We were right next to the small beach, but there was just too much glass and other litter lying around to really use it. The bathhouse was medium dirty and there was one washing machine for the whole loop. They have two playgrounds, but neither can be reached by foot (curvy road with no sidewalk for 10 minutes).
We wanted to visit the observation tower, but the street was not passable with our rig and there was no parking.
The good thing about this park is its location close to the highway and it looked like fun if you have 4x4.

Check in is easy. All sites are paved, level, and spaced out well. Ice and firewood are not available on site. Both are available close by.

We had a one night stay and wish it could have been longer. Campground is spotless and very quiet. The slots were spacious with lots of room between. Each slot had a fire ring and picnic table. The bathrooms were clean and nice.
If you want a nice quiet place to camp this is the spot.

When you have scratched off all the states on your map in the lower half of the US, but LA, you just have to make a trip there at the next school break. We chose Poverty Point State Park as a base to go to Poverty Point World Heritage site and Vicksburg.

The check-in was easy. The office clerk was not overly friendly and offered no information about the area or the CG. The drive into the CG is really quite pretty and there are several loops. Our campsite was water/electric only and was the cheapest type of site. Those sites back to trees and have trees, etc. between them, but it took some maneuvering to avoid the branches that encroached in the site. The sites are all concrete or asphalt. The FHU sites were more in the open and didn't have foliage around them.

The 50 amp electric didn't work, so we called the office. The clerk kept insisting she was getting ready to leave, but did not offer to put us in one of the other campsites which were mostly empty. Fortunately, the maintenance workers were willing to stay a little later and one of them fixed the electricity.

The campground is by a pretty big lake with beautiful homes on the other side. There are a few trails and small Indian mounds, but everything was very muddy and wet with all the rain, so we didn't go on them. There is a splash pad that operates in the summer apparently. Since it was winter, the CG was pretty empty, so was quiet. A train passed by in the distance a couple of times.

Poverty Point World Heritage site was about 20 minutes away with interesting Indian mounds and a good Jr. Ranger program. There is a drive-through Wild Animal Safari less than 10 miles away that was excellent. Monroe, LA is about 40 minutes away.

We had 3-4 bars of Verizon (w/wo booster), but there was only enough bandwidth to check email in the evenings. The CG has wifi, but didn't work in our site at all.

This park has nice size, level sites. The FHU sites are slightly shaded (not big trees). The water/electric sites are wooded with lots of shade and more privacy.

The bathhouse is very clean. A laundry with 2 washers and 2 dryers ($1.75 per load) is located in the bathhouse building.

A water play area is available for the kids.

A marina and beach area is a short drive around the lake.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. We stopped one night en-route from Dallas back to Tampa. Arrived in rain at sunset, but found site and back-in was easy. WiFi ok for email but not enough to stream. Had 2 bars on both Visible (Verizon) and Cricket (ATT). Want to come back, looks like a nice park.

Initial opinion is that some sites are more level than others. I did not need sewer hookup, but it was available
