Took advantage of the Owl Prowl night hike. Although the late it was a great way to end the day outdoors. Super cool to have an owl call back! Terrific facilities at our campsite, thus far the neatest & cleanest campsite with a terrific bath house.

Gorgeous park with relatively secluded and well maintained tent camping sites. The bathrooms were really nice and centrally located. There is a nice short hike you can take near Loop C that leads to a beautiful overlook for the sunset. Technically it's not part of the trail but it's easy enough to find. Only stayed one night but the park seemed to have many activities including a beach.

Claytor Lake State Park is our favorite place to stay when visiting family in Virginia. We’ve returned several times and enjoyed each stay. We camped here in a 35 foot fifth wheel.

Reservations for Virginia State Parks are non site specific. We make reservations for one of the big pull through sites in section D and choose one of the available ones when we arrive. Each site has water and electric, a picnic table, and fire pit. The sites are wide enough that you don’t feel like you are on top of your neighbor. There are no waterfront sites in the park but the lake is just a short walk from the campground.

There are plenty of things to do in the area to keep you busy. The state park has a nice beach and swimming area, hiking trails, a marina, and gift shop with free Wi-Fi. The Blue Ridge Parkway is close enough for a day trip and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg is just a short drive away. Claytor Lake is a popular family destination.

We visited Claytor Lake State Park in April, 2014 and also in May, 2013.

We camped in Campground D, which has Electricity and Water. The other Campgrounds can fit big rigs, but only has water. The campground has pull through sites with one entry road and two loop roads into the sites. Our site had a large pine tree for shade, and campers are only allowed to place chairs, or items within the wooden borders of the camp site. There is grass, trees, an walking area between the sites. The middle sites in D are larger than the first row of sites, and there is several sites running adjacent to the forest area. The park has No Internet/Wi-Fi, at the campgrounds, only at the beach house. The park has several hiking and mountain biking trails, and lots of water sports, and Marina. The place is pretty quiet during the week, but on the weekends that goes out the door. Except, I have to admit come quiet times, everyone was quiet! The park is always full so is recommended to make reservations. The closest stores 3 miles away, major stores and restaurants 18 miles away in Christiansburg. We also took advantage of the New River Trail which runs 57 miles from Galax to Pulanski. Lots of things to do here, birdwatching is great, stargazing, and water sports. If you get the chance to come this way visit the Mercantile Market in Draper, Va, approximately 9 miles from Claytor Lake State Park. The food is amazing, a little pricey but from the Farm to the Table. Super fresh, great atmosphere, and wonderful staff. Other than the showers which need help, some barely have water, others so powerful it hurts, and the phone service, this park is Fantastic.

We arrived about mid day found a spacious back-in spot under the trees. We were promptly met by the friendly camp host who offered to blow off out site with their leaf blower. We politely declined. The hosts could not have been more helpful. They visited frequently when we were out to check on our well being. The bathhouse was clean and quite spacious.

Beautiful State Park. We stayed here because we were dropping our daughter off at VT, which is only about 25 minutes away. The park is very clean and well maintained, which I have found to be the standard at all of VAs state parks. Bathhouse was clean and well kept.

We didn't use the lake since we were busy with college stuff, but it's a pretty lake and there were lots of amenities available.

We stayed in Campground D which has water/electric hookups. One thing that was a bit different is that at most of the state parks you tend to a have large somewhat private site, in the area towards the back of campground D (sites D12 and up) it was more like a regular campground. Sites were closer together with much less tree coverage. Not bad sites, but not what I expect from the state parks.

This is a really nice state park offering a recreational area with boating, canoes, kayak, swimming and several nice hiking trails. The RV campground (Campground D) is very nicely laid out with about half reserved sites and the other half unassigned reservations (meaning you choose you site upon arrival. The camp host William was superb and very helpful and keeps a tidy camp. Clean heated bathhouse, level pea-gravel pads. Site are a bit close together but not elbow to elbow. The host cleans, rakes each site before each new arrival. We stayed over Easter weekend, the Host passed out Easter candy and the kids had an Easter egg hunt. Very nice touch. We were at the campground over Easter weekend visiting a nephew at Virginia Tech. The CG is about 30 minute easy drive to VT campus.

We stayed on B loop in our 23’ trailer and had a nice time. It was during the week so most campsites were empty. The sites are close together in B and there are lots of trees but no undergrowth between sites. They have a nice marina on the lake, a very nice swimming area and lots of trails. There is an old homestead and other sites to visit in the park.

We love Virginia State Parks, but we weren't thrilled with campground B. It's smaller and has no hookups, which is fine. It had very little privacy though unfortunately (at least by VA State Park standards).
We had trouble getting to our site because the signage was not very good and ended up going the wrong way down a one way street. The camp host was nice about it, but a better layout and signs would have prevented it IMHO.

We stayed one night on our way out East. Great trails for biking/walking, great lake with beach area. Sites are close together, some are pull through. Facilities were average.
