“Authentic windmill from Denmark built in 1848”
The Danish Windmill is a museum for all people interested in Denmark, Danish customs, Scandinavian traditions and, of course, windmills. Elk Horn’s Danish windmill is America’s only authentic working Danish windmill. The mill, originally built in Nørre Snede, Denmark in 1848 was brought to the United States in November, 1975 and rebuilt in Elk Horn, Iowa by community volunteers in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year.
Interesting, quick stop if you're in the area. We stopped by The Little Mermaid sculpture garden before this and it was on the way back to the highway.
There's a short video, and then you're escorted on a short tour of the mill itself. It was very neat!
For $3 ($1 for kids under 12) you can watch a short informational video and take a self-guided tour of America's only working Danish windmill. I was a big fan of the mill & the delightfully Danish town of Elk Horn overall. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area!
