“b&b in a cave? yes please!”

Carved into the side of a sandstone cliff, Kokopelli's Cave Bed &; Breakfast> is a fully furnished grotto, 70 feet underground. A narrow trail winds down from the mesa top to the 1,650-square-foot cave, which geologist-owner Bruce Black blasted out in the 1980s and opened a decade later. The decor is nothing fancy (think college dorm room meets the Flintstones) until you realize you're in a subterranean guesthouse, where anything that couldn't be carried in--hello, fridge!--had to be winched over the cliff face. The waterfall shower is a nice touch, but the biggest draw is the view of the La Plata River, 300 feet below, and the craggy spires of Shiprock on the horizon.

Booked two nights here for my parents' anniversary. My family of 4 stayed together in one room. At first, we were hesitant to have a reservation here because the stay might feel uncomfortable. But when we arrived here, we immediately fell in love with this place. The room was not cramped and it did not feel tight at all. The place was nicely lit and very well furnished. It was quite a challenge going down, though. The stairs was steep and rugged. So for a tip, pack light and leave all the unnecessary stuff at home.

For those not keen on the idea of staying in a cold damp cave, don't worry, the entire underground bed and breakfast stays at a toasty (and dry) 68F to 73F all year long. In order to get down into the cave there's a bit of a hike and some ladder climbing as well, so pack light and leave the unnecessary stuff at home.

Stayed the night with friends at Kokopelli's Cave. The trip down is a little tricky and I sort of slipped going up and down, but the view toward Ship Rock is wonderful. Breakfast is left for you, and we cooked our dinner on our own and sat out on the parapet at sunset. It is quiet and relaxing. Believe it or not you can get television here, but relaxing, reading and just enjoying our friends was the best. The chipmunks and other wildlife is fun to watch. They have food for them in the cave.
We haven't had an opportunity to go back, but I would in a second.
