“come walk in the steps of those before us”

Come gaze across the curved canyon walls! Among the remarkable geological cliff formations of the canyon itself, the shapes of the former homes of ancient inhabitants of Walnut Canyon are easily evident. On a hike along the Rim or Island Trails you can imagine what life was like along and within Walnut Canyon while visiting actual pueblos and walking in the steps of those who came before us.

Walnut Canyon National Monument was established by President Woodrow Wilson on November 30, 1915, to preserve ancient cliff dwellings. Initially managed by the US Forest Service, the monument was transferred to the National Park Service in 1934. Today a variety of archeological and natural resources are preserved on approximately 3600 acres.Understanding of earlier populations comes from multiple perspectives, including the traditional history of the people themselves and interpretations by archeologists of structures and artifacts that remain.

Pets only allowed in parking lot. About 6 miles off the road and then just a very short walk to a great observation point. No need to hike to see the dwellings from above.

Very cool stop. Be sure to do the hike around the island as there are many neat dwellings that are not visible from above. There are quite a few steps but the whole hike takes less than an hour. This does not compare to Mesa Verde but still worth the stop.

Really interesting place to visit and such a short drive right outside Flagstaff. It's a great museum and an easy hike around the canyon thanks to a well maintained trail system.

AMAZING!!!!! Be sure to bring your walking shoes - relatively easy with stairs up and down. Be sure to NOT MISS the trail around the "island" - where you can get really up close and personal with some cliff dwellings

The cliff dwellings are in a beautiful tree-covered canyon and are viewable from the visitor center. Amazing piece of indigenous peoples history. Small and steep hike through the peaceful canyon. Very beautiful place.

Great piece of history and museum. Visited three years ago when (1) I was 25 lbs lighter, (2) had two fewer heart attacks, (3) our puppy could join us and (4) we didn't know what we were in for. My wife and puppy stopped half way but I trudged on with two cameras, several lenses and a tripod. Beautiful views of the the canyon and dwellings. Could have stayed all day, and almost did because the trip back up was more strenuous than I anticipated and people coming down kept asking if I was alright because a lady and a dog were worried and wanted to make sure I was all right. I made it back and am glad I went. This trip, however, I remained at the park offices and museum.
