“home of Sir William Johnson”
Old Fort Johnson is the original 1749 limestone house, on the north bank of the Mohawk River, New York Colony, built by Sir William Johnson, (Warragh-i-ya-gey), Superintendent of Indian Affairs and hero at the Battles of Lake George and Fort Niagara. The Old Fort was home to William, Catherine Wisenberg, Molly Brant, John Johnson and family throughout the French & Indian War. Photographs and line drawings of the Old Fort can be studied at the Historic American Buildings Survey website. Today the Old Fort is a museum and more. Here visitors can steep themselves in the social, cultural, military and industrial past of the Mohawk Valley. And though the Old Fort has been the setting for many historical books, no fiction could be as interesting as the real story of Old Fort Johnson, presented and preserved here for all to enjoy.
A great historical stop during your trip. We visited out of season during COVID and were only able to tour the grounds but it's well worth the stop. The fort itself is stunning along with the onsite gardens. We were fortunate enough to have a volunteer stop by while were were visiting and they provided us with great information about all the summer events they hold at the site. You could see there's a lot of passion that goes into maintaining this historical landmark.
