There is much that can be learned about a hotel, especially a chain, by interacting with their employees. Bahia Mar is part of the Double Tree by Hilton. Our morning began with Luckenson, the gentleman at the front counter. We arrived earlier than check in time and Luckenson did an excellent job of getting us into a room before the official 4 p.m. check in time. We are very aware that cannot always happen, but the fact that he took the extra time to do so was greatly appreciated. Our room key didn’t work and Luckenson took the time to come with me to our room and make sure the new one did. He even brought a walkie-talkie in case he needed further assistance - talk about excellent service and preparation for all future needs.
The rooms are currently being renovated and ours was one of the newer ones. The rooms are clean; the mattresses and pillows are comfortable. The air conditioning works wonderfully! There are about 6 channels on the television that do not work. It wouldn’t have been a big deal, but there had been a terrorist attack in London and we were trying to watch all the news channels. The ice machines do not all work, which can lead to long walks to fill an ice bucket.
We ate breakfast at the Breezes restaurant in the hotel. The breakfast buffet is expensive, however, ordering off their menu is reasonable. The food is mediocre, but the staff is excellent. Catalina, the hostess, is a wealth of information and knows the area well. Sahly, our waitress, was quick with drinks, service, and friendly. They were both top notch.
We ate lunch at The Market, a deli that is part of the resort. The sandwiches were excellent and freshly made. They also have continental breakfast foods, a coffee bar, and an excellent variety of ice cream.
The hotel is located across the street from the beach. There is an overpass walkway that leads to the beach and entrance back into the hotel is secured through room keys. The beach has a work out area and a lifeguard right where the hotel sidewalk ends. On the opposite end of the beach, is an outdoor swimming pool on the second floor. It is unique to have a true deep end (8 feet), unfortunately there is not a very shallow end. Children that are not good swimmers will need a flotation device. There are towels provided and once again, the service is excellent. The young man working the pool department, brought us a couple of extra towels and was very friendly.
The location is only 7 minutes from the airport and a $15.00 Uber ride. Well worth the cost to spend the day at the beach. And while the location is awesome, rooms are the great, and the food is mediocre; it is truly the employees that make this location shine. I have rarely seen a more pleasant, competent and helpful staff. We would highly recommend this location and we will be back!
