“Come explore the rich history”

The Doaksville site is where Josiah Doaks built his trading post in the early 1820’s prior to the establishment of Indian Territory. Following the treaties of Dancing Rabbit Creek and Doaks Stand, the site became a major destination and later the largest town in Indian Territory. As commerce and infrastructure grew, so did Doaksville—leading to Doaksville becoming the capitol of Choctaw Nation in the late 1830’s. With the abandonment of nearby Fort Towson that had provided business and protection, Doaksville began its decline and reached its breaking point in 1871 when a railroad was built one mile south and took the town with it. Come explore the rich history and physical remains of Doaksville through the walking trails and interpretive signage that tell the story of those who lived there.
