“The historic home of John Brown”
Liberty Hall Historic Site (LHHS) serves as a learning center that engages the public in exploring the history, politics, social and cultural life in early Kentucky through the homes, gardens, documents, and artifacts of Senator John Brown and his family. Built by Senator John Brown in 1796, Liberty Hall Mansion is said to be haunted by at least three ghosts. Mrs. Brown’s kindly aunt, Mrs. Margaret Varick, died of a heart attack around 1817 in an upstairs bedroom. She was buried on the grounds but was lost when the graves were moved; after that, she began to appear as a kindly apparition, nicknamed the Gray Lady. Another ghost is believed to be a visiting Spanish opera star, who disappeared when she was walking from the gardens out toward the river. She was never seen again; speculation was made that she was abducted. A dark-haired female apparition is sometimes seen running through the gardens, her mouth open in a silent shriek. The third entity seen here is the ghost of a War of 1812 soldier in a British uniform, seen peeking into the living room windows.
