Their oceanfront sites put you out on a peninsula with some of the best water views you will have on a Maine campground. No hookups, but there is water nearby.

This campground is ideal if you are looking at staying close to Freeport and take advantage of all the shopping.

We had a beautiful 5 night stay at Recompence in October 2015. Our loop, with water + electric hookups, was mostly empty.

The campground has plenty of walkable and bikeable trails throughout the property. Wolfe's Neck Farm, which is also on the same property, is worth a visit. You can get up to the fenceline where the sheep and cattle graze. There's also a small farmer's market where you can buy seasonal produce, and I believe you can also visit the cows in the dairy barn.

Laundry facility is meh - two washers (one jumbo and one standard) and two dryers. When I was there, the jumbo washer was advertised as taking 30 minutes, but it didn't finish cycling through my load until nearly an hour. I was nervous because the standard washer that I was running at the same time started leaking all over the ground and stalled during it's cycle. Ultimately, I got my laundry cleaned + out, and through the dryers with no problem. Hopefully by the time you visit their laundry situation will be fixed.

Even w/o laundry opportunities. I would absolutely return to Recompence again in a heartbeat. The staff were warm and welcoming. The site was clean, quiet and beautiful. Easy 10 minute drive into Freeport and 30 minutes to Portland.

This campground has something for everyone. I absolutely loved it here and would definitely come again. The campground is located just outside the very charming town of Freeport, which has great restaurants and shops, but far enough away to be feel very remote and relaxed. As mentioned in other reviews, this is a working farm as well as a community organic garden location. The campground offers a well stocked store within the office area, a small snack shop, and available local produce. Wifi is available and free in two locations; the office/snack area and in the 'East Bay' camp area where there is water/electric hookup sites. I stayed in the 'West Bay' camp area and dry camped with an ocean view site. (There is also a 'Middle Bay' for tents only.)

There are water entry access points located throughout the campground and kayaks available to rent for a nominal fee. The one bathroom facility in 'West Bay' is large, very clean (a bit rustic) and includes showers. There are also pit toilets dotted more frequently through out. Sites were pretty level packed earth and fairly large. There are a number of shade trees, especially along the ocean edge. A few of the interior sites that border the grass area/meadow are full sun, so something to keep in mind.

I took a lot of photo's and it was hard to decide which to post, so a great place for photography, birding, kayaking, swimming, watching the tide, checking out the farm animals, and a playground for the kids.

We stayed there last summer-2016- on our way up the Maine Coast on our way to Ellsworth and beyond. We fell onto this Campground and thoroughly enjoyed our brief stay and would recommend to all.

What a unique campground! We loved the concept of camping on a working farm, but being on the ocean as well was pretty awesome combination. If you could can get by without electricity and water, there were too many to count gorgeous spots right along the shoreline. Since we couldn't, we were in the only loop with connections which has no water views. Their website was helpful and being able to book online was nice. Their pictures were a good representation of each campsite. No spots at the campground had sewer connections and the dump station was a pull in and back out because the worker's cars were parked in a way that blocked being able to pull through.

The shower house was the only area with working plumbing. The rest of the campground had pit toilets. They had air fresheners installed, but that did little to help. They also had hand sanitizer installed in our loop's toilet, as there was no running water/sink. Given having no sewer connection and the fact we hate cleaning our shower, we regularly use a campground's shower house. We dreaded our showers here and knocked a star off for them. They were very bare bones, mostly dirty, and were just ugh. They had four stalls and kept the doors open with door stoppers, so all kinds of "things" hung out in them. One night one had some kind of animal poop in it. Not great, but survivable.

The spots on the outer sites on our loop were more spacious and backed up to trees. We were in the inner loop, which we still felt was fine in terms of space, but we backed up to an open field. The sites were clean. Ours was pretty level but there was a drainage ditch that unfortunately lined right up to our door, so we had to be super careful when entering/exiting our rig otherwise we could have fallen into the ditch.

The camp office had some fresh produce and milk from the farm for sell and the farm also had a little stand with more choices. The camp food stand looked awesome. They were advertising a full lobster dinner option on Saturdays and wood fired pizza night on Fridays. They, however, gave us no notice at check-in that they would be closing the stand during our stay, so we missed out.

We didn't do any farm tours, but it looked like they had several options to see things there, especially for kids. We loved our walks through the campground and farm. The dairy cows would be let out at night and were right by the roads and at low tide we watched some folks out digging for clams.

Proximity to Freeport was only a couple minute pretty drive. On the way into town was Bow Street Market which was like a combination grocery/farmers market with a full liquor store. We stocked up there and spent an evening at the outlets in town and LL Bean. The town closes super early at this time of the year, so there wasn't too many options outside of LL Bean after 6p. We drove to Portland for a night, and found that to be super easy from this location.

We'd stay again and recommended it to another couple talking about staying in Freeport.

There’s not much to add to the other reviews here. We loved this little farm/campground and will definitely camp here again when we come to the coast.

We booked site 812 online, but when we arrived a tent camping fella offered to switch with us. He was in 810 and it was a little too wide open for his taste, with campers on either side. So we jumped at his offer and took site 810, which was enormous and had a nice view of the bay. Site 812 is lovely and much more private, but might have been difficult to fit our 28’ Airstream without unhitching.

An easy overnight near Freeport. We had water and electric. Love the “learning to farm” concept. Unfortunately the farm store was not open when we stopped.

This a beautiful campground with lots of sites near the water. The other reviews have great descriptions.

Limited sites and access if your motorhome or trailer is over 30 feet. Roads are narrow. You definitely need to looks at the site dimensions and they have a picture of every site. Pay close attention to angle you will have to back into and what the ground looks like. We had a pretty narrow entry way with drainage ditch on either side and the road was narrow. There are some large sites, but if you haven't made a reservation, they will most likely not be available.

They have made many improvement since our last visit 3 years ago and it is a great educational opportunity for adults and children. Pay attention to their schedule. They host many events and if you are there on a weekend when they have something scheduled, there will be a lot traffic and people....not a tranquil experience.

What a great stay....it is listed as top campground in New England....if for sure. We had a beautiful spot over looking the bay. Working farm so a lot of interesting hiking around seeing the farm as well. Great visit ....just felt so secluded and quiet....what a relaxing stay.

We absolutely loved our stay at Wolfe's Neck. The location can't be beat, and the surroundings are breathtaking. We really enjoyed being able to visit all of the gardens and farming facilities. A few notes:
- Loved that we could compost :)
- You have to pass the turn for most of the RV spots in order to check in, so you end up having to turn around. Fine for us, but probably tricky in a larger rig.
- Majority of the RV spots are not oceanfront
- Wifi was very spotty at our site...essentially unusable.
- While there is cell signal in other parts of the property, we had hardly any connectivity at our site.
- Water pressure was pretty low
