“over 13 trail heads to choose from”
The Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail in Stark County provides 25 miles for hiking and biking, and more than 19 miles of horseback riding. The Stark County section is part of the 80+ mile Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area that connects Cuyahoga, Summit, Stark, and Tuscarawas counties. Begin your adventure at one of the 13 trailheads along the Stark County portion through the former canal villages of Canal Fulton, Massillon, and Navarre. Enjoy picnicking at Lock 4, Lake Avenue, John Glenn Grove, or Craig Pittman trailheads. Fish along the canal at Lock 4 or in the parallel Tuscarawas River. A primitive campsite located at Bridgeport Quarry is available for hikers and bikers touring the Towpath Trail; it is available for one night only on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (a.k.a. C&O Canal Towpath) follows the route of the Potomac River for 184.5 miles between Georgetown in Washington, D.C., and Cumberland, Maryland. Hundreds of original features, including locks, lock houses, aqueducts and other canal structures, are reminders of the canal's role as a transportation system during the Canal Era, which peaked in the mid-19th century.
