“interpreting the life & legacy of the 17th president”
The Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and National Cemetery interprets the life and legacy of the 17th President. Andrew Johnson's presidency, 1865-1869, illustrates the United States Constitution at work following President Lincoln's assassination and during attempts to reunify a nation torn by civil war. His presidency shaped the future of the United States and his influences continue today.
If you enjoy history, you will like exploring the Andrew Johnson Historical Site. It actually consists of four different sites: his tailor shop/museum/park headquarters, his pre-presidency home, his post-presidency home, and the national cemetery where he is buried. The tour of his last home is a must! The guide was very knowledgeable and the most of the items in the house were original—linens, clothing, toys, furniture, kitchen utensils, etc. The tour is free, but you must get tickets at the park headquarters!
Obviously an important historical figure, as the first US president to be impeached. Seeing the resting place of a former President is reason enough to make this a stop. Born in Raleigh, NC, Greeneville, TN was the town of his early life, as well as the town he moved to when he left the Presidency, as well as his final resting place. Keep in mind that his home, the museum, and his gravesite are in three different places, but all within easy driving distance. His gravesite, from a hilltop he used to climb and love, has a wonderful view of Greeneville and the surrounding area, and has some benches to sit and enjoy the view (or even have a picnic, if you can get into having a picnic at a cemetery). Hundreds of locals veterans are also buried (and continue to be buried) at the cemetery, as was his wish.
Stay at the Captain Morgan Inn, on Main St in the middle of all the Johnson sites. Beautiful old train hotel, less than chain hotels and simply lovely.
