“a place to connect”
In December, 2006, I purchased a building in downtown Hammonton that needed to be rescued and rehabilitated. I wanted to contribute to the exciting revitalization that was taking place in our downtown business district. The building was a significant property, built in the late 1800’s, and had been home to many contributing retail businesses over the 100+ years - from a fashionable shoe store in 1890 to a meat market to a photo processing center for 50 years until 2005! I knew that the next retail venture had to be something just as important to the commerce of the downtown. At that time, there was not a place to hang, study, meet a friend, or hold a small meeting. There wasn’t a specialty coffee business that seemed so common in other towns. I researched this business and decided it was the right fit for the building and the right fit for the downtown. Because my husband and I wanted to continue his family name as a Hammonton business, we chose his grandfather’s original Italian name of Casciano for my new Coffee Bar & Sweetery. With the support of my entire family -- my sister’s graphic and artistic contributions, my mother’s help at the store and holding down the fort at home, my brother’s web design and internet newsletter, my sister-in-law’s design input, my husband’s taste-tasting of all products and my children’s understanding that I was no longer a stay-at-home mom -- I was able to renovate the building, research the industry, build-out the store and present my new business for its opening in November, 2007! It has been a wonderful experience! The downtown has continued to thrive and grow. We feel excited to be apart of its growth and we thank the loyal customers of Casciano Coffee Bar & Sweetery, everyday, for their support for making this business venture a success.
