As the southern most barrier island in the Cape Lookout National Seashore, Shackleford Banks is accessed by boat or ferry.
Aside from having the clearest water in North Carolina, the island is also home to over 100 wild horses. These mesmerizing horses have learned to adapt to the land since their ancestors' arrival hundreds of years ago.
