“The Origins of Huck Finn!”

The mission of The Mark Twain House & Museum is to foster an appreciation of the legacy of Mark Twain as one of our nation’s defining cultural figures, and to demonstrate the continuing relevance of his work, life and times. The Mark Twain House & Museum has restored the author’s Hartford, Connecticut, home, where the author and his family lived from 1874 to 1891. Twain wrote his most important works during the years he lived there, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. In addition to providing tours of Twain’s restored home, a National Historic Landmark, the institution offers activities and educational programs that illuminate Twain’s literary legacy and provide information about his life and times. The Mark Twain House & Museum, a National Historic Landmark in Hartford, Connecticut, was the home of America’s greatest author, Samuel Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) and his family from 1874 to 1891. It is also where Twain lived when he wrote his most important works, including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Prince and The Pauper and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court. A stunning example of Picturesque Gothic architecture, the 25-room home features a dramatic grand hall, a lush glass conservatory, a grand library and the handsome billiard room where Twain wrote his famous books.

Guided tours of the Tiffany-designed house are held regularly throughout the day. They also offer package deals to include the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who lived next door to Twain. The tour includes the history of the Beckett family. Small exhibits are also on view in the main building, and events are held in the Hal Holbrook auditorium, named for the actor who so frequently portrayed Twain on stage. Members of the North American Reciprocal Museum program receive free admission (as of this writing, check the NARM website). Tour is about an hour.

Two kinds of tours, one with a "character" and one is just the regular tour. Take the "character" tour - especially if you have kids. We got Twain's daughter Susie as our guide and I felt like I gained a new perspective. She only "broke" character at the end and was so helpful with all our questions! It was also nice because it was a private tour with JUST our family. You might not be that lucky if it's really busy... but if you go at a non peak time you should be fine.

The renovations to the house are beautiful. Admission includes a 1 hour tour. Our tour guide sounded very scripted, but she had a lot of cool info. Wish we would have had more time to watch the video.
