Historic Treasure

Our Take

No photos are allowed inside of the Mark Twain house, but that gives you more time to absorb its beauty with your own eyes. The cathedral-like interiors feature hand-stenciled walls, Tiffany glass, and so much dark woodwork that you’ll want to break off from the tour group and crack open a leather-bound novel (or write your own).

Two kinds of tours, one with a "character" and one is just the regular tour. Take the "character" tour - especially if you have kids. We got Twain's daughter Susie as our guide and I felt like I gained a new perspective. She only "broke" character at the end and was so helpful with all our questions! It was also nice because it was a private tour with JUST our family. You might not be that lucky if it's really busy... but if you go at a non peak time you should be fine.

We were very excited to visit, our first stop on our first RV trip! However while I was in the process of purchasing our tickets, someone purchased them online and now no tickets were available.

The front desk did nothing to try to accommodate us except tell us we were in the fire late.

For future reference, but your tickets on line.

Guided tours of the Tiffany-designed house are held regularly throughout the day. They also offer package deals to include the home of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who lived next door to Twain. The tour includes the history of the Beckett family. Small exhibits are also on view in the main building, and events are held in the Hal Holbrook auditorium, named for the actor who so frequently portrayed Twain on stage. Members of the North American Reciprocal Museum program receive free admission (as of this writing, check the NARM website). Tour is about an hour.

We did the ghost tour which is offered on Fri and Sat night. Not scary at all and got to go in a few areas that the regular tours didn't go.

We didn’t do the tour and can’t go inside the house without doing it, but just being there was very cool. The architecture is amazing.

The renovations to the house are beautiful. Admission includes a 1 hour tour. Our tour guide sounded very scripted, but she had a lot of cool info. Wish we would have had more time to watch the video.
