“Under new management”
Al's Chickenette in Hays, Kansas opened in 1949. The restaurant closed in October 2010, but was reopened by new owners in May 2011. The new owners got the old restaurant's recipes and most of the ceramic chickens and photos that adorned the shelves and walls for years. If someone did not know about the change, they might not see a difference. The chicken restaurant has a wonderful old neon sign and a lot of history. It is clean and very reasonably priced. Al's Chickenette is mostly on the list of Unique Kansas Restaurants for tradition and atmosphere, but there are a few choice items on the menu. After sampling several dishes, the chicken fried steak has been the best dish by far. The hand breaded steak has a good tasting, peppery coating. Fans of the Crawford County fried chicken restaurants would Love the fried chicken.
Great place on our road trip! Foods great and service fun. Atmosphere is worth the stop!!
This place is amazing! Great fried chicken options and tasty side options! If you like a ‘home cooked meal’ feel, then you must eat here!
Such a cute place and really good fried chicken complete with retired farmers drinking 25 cent coffee. Worth a stop if you are driving through Kansas! We had the fried chicken, chicken fried steak and strawberry rhubarb pie. Everything was fresh, hot and made from scratch. A great Kansas experience.
Worth the drive to this hidden little place here, mash potatoes and chicken!! Delish!!!
We stopped on our road trip and the food was good. Not a huge choice for picky eaters like my kids. Staff was nice, but I wasn't hugely impressed. We were there late afternoon, so it wasn't busy but the servers weren't attentive. Maybe all the reviews I read I hyped it up too much.
Tried to stop here on 7/7/18 but it was closed for a kitchen remodel. No date listed for the reopening.
Pretty good!! The special of the day: creamy shredded chicken pot pie was delicious! Definitely recommend stopping by if passing through.
Food was amazing! Chicken fried chicken was great! Chicken tenders were huge! We sampled all the pies and everyone of them were amazing! Andrew is the best server in the place! Highly recommended and well worth the stop!!
