“once a stop along the historic California Trail”

Red Rock Canyon is a beautiful example of nature's artwork in Oklahoma. Wind, water and natural forces have shaped 260 million-year-old deposits from the Permian geological period Into the natural sculpture you see today. Before the mid-1800s, Plains Indians used the canyon as a winter camp. Game was abundant, the water was pure and clean and it was an escape from the cold prairie winds, just as it is today. The canyon became a landmark on the California Road. During the 1849 California Gold Rush, the westward leading road was a haven for weary travelers. It provided fresh water, grazing for livestock and a place to rest and repair their wagons. In 1956, the City of Hinton, Hinton Kiwanis Club, and one other individual donated the land, known as Kiwanis Canyon Park to the state. The park was renamed Red Rock Canyon State Park. The 310 acres of steep, rugged cliffs and canyons make the park a favorite spot for camping and hiking. As of November 1st, 2018 the Red Rock Canyon State Park was no longer operated by the State of Oklahoma. However, the park is now privately operated with a desire to see this beautiful park continue to thrive and reach more visitors to showcase the beauty of Red Rock Canyon. The canyon floor is home to a rich ecosystem that includes many varieties of trees, birds and animal life. Nature puts on a spectacular fall foliage show from mid-October to mid-November but every season is special at Red Rock Canyon Adventure Park.

Red Rock Canyon is a hidden gem. Drive down the steep road into the canyon and you'll be totally surprised and delighted. It's only a few minutes south of Interstate 40 an hour west of Oklahoma City. It will be a regular weekend escape for us.

This is one of the best Oklahoma State Parks because it is so well taken care of! It's not too far off of I-40 and it is right outside a great small town with many amenities, including: gas stations, convenient stores, restaurants and a grocery store. Getting into the park is a little scary, just because the entrance road is really steep but totally doable! Our 2500 Sierra had no problem taking our 30 ft Airstream down or up that incline. This campground has wonderful views due to the beautiful red canyon walls and some great hiking trails. There are only a handful of 50 amp hookups (I believe 5) and the rest are 30 amp. The campground has 1 dump station in the canyon and one next to the office out of the canyon.

We stayed at Red Rock Canyon State Park 5/9/17-5/11/17. As others have noted, there is a very steep hill as you enter the park and we took it very slow going down with our 34-foot fifth wheel. It was mid-week and the park was quiet so we did not encounter any traffic issues going down the hill but two vehicles would likely not be able to pass each other on this part of the road. We passed Canyon Campground and Walnut Grove Campground and settled into the last camping area, California Road Campground, space #54. There's a dump site right before you get to California Road Camp. Space #54 is a 50 amp site with water, it's right next to a creek and has a picnic bench and fire ring. The camp attendant stops by and collects the camping fee each day. We paid $22 each night.
It rained during our stay but we still enjoyed the hiking and birdwatching throughout the park. The trails are marked but it's a good idea to take the map with you as the trails cross each other a few times and we accidentally took a much longer rainy hike than we intended.
We both used the showers while there and they were clean and hot. It's fifty cents/3 minute.
All in all, easy park with nice hiking and a reasonable rate. We'd stay again if we pass through Oklahoma.

This lovely state park is almost right in town, but it looks like another world. Stopped here for the night, but would certainly stay longer if time permitted. The rate reflects a $2.00 discount, but I'm not sure what it was for. We do have disabled plates, so maybe that was it. Or my gray hair. Our site was a 50AMP pull through near the end of the park. Everything we saw was clean and well maintained. We had time to enjoy one of the nature trails; it was very nice, but if you have a canine hiking buddy, this would be a good time to put on the protective hiking booties if you have them. I pulled a bunch of evil stickery things out of one paw.

This is a fantastic getaway in Oklahoma. Down in a canyon with 80ft red cliff walls on Both sides. A small creek running down one side. Great trails, a decent bathroom. Just not what you expect from scenery in Oklahoma! We stayed on site 63. Last one in the loop, no one on either side, but a creek next to us and the trail head on the other side. Some traffic and cars parking because of it, but no one bothered us. I will definatly come back here.

Went the weekend after Labor Day weekend...free swimming, sno cones, barbecue sandwiches, games and free outdoor movies in the evening. The camp site is beautiful and very well taken care of. The owners are the friendliest. My family has loved it and can’t wait to come back. Truly a hidden gem!

It is a steep little road going down into canyon but it is very beautiful once in there. We had plenty of shade . Husband put up hammock. Drones flew frequently. Electric and water at camp site did have one dump station in the park and had one when leaving at the top of the ridge. Good cell service. There are several hiking trails we did not get a chance to explore. Will have to visit again.

I’ve been going here since I was a child, we had Methodist youth camp there or nearby, been too long ago for me to remeber where the camp is exactly, I didn’t see it, it has a pool and cabins as well, I think maybe method camp is next valley over to the East. I saw Methodist road, that’s gotta be it. But as far as red rock. Yes I’ll go again soon. So nice. I guess $30.00 a night is becoming the going rate most places. Even if no sewer hookup. Dang inflation everything’s goes up except my wages. Lol. Not funny really. I’ll certainly hike some of the trails there next time. Just no time this trip. Definitely check this place out. 😁

Had reservations for two nights. Due to unprecedented bad weather we wanted to see if it was possible to move to another later date. Left phone messages, emails, website messages for two days. Never got a call back. Reservation came and went without being able to use it. I would have completely accepted if we were told that the cancellation policy was that no refund was available and we could not reschedule, but to simply be ignored and have no response was frustrating and meant we had to wait multiple extra days before we could try to look for other options. Unless you are 100% certain you will use a reservation at this site, I would advise to go elsewhere as they will never call you back if you want to make any changes.
