“honor one of America's greatest explorers!”

What better way to honor one of the original adventurers Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, than with a road trip to his memorial statue? The Natchez Trace was his last journey - he was killed by two gunshot wounds while staying at Grinder's Stand inn by the side of the road, and the reason remains unclear to this day. Stop at mile marker 385.9 to see the monument dedicated to the man, and even visit a reconstructed version of the inn where he was killed.

There is a free campground, fire pits at each site, trash cans, a bathroom (no showers). It was nice, there were lots of fireflies and very few of the sites were occupied (midweek). There is a creek as well,a short walk from the campground--but we did come across a small water snake and some leeches.

This was a great place to take a break while driving the length of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Granted, we stopped near midnight and it was pitch black, but what we saw (with our flashlights!) was definitely worth the stop. It's open 24 hours and there is also a clean public restroom.
