“explore one of the world's longest caves”

Hidden beneath the rolling prairie of the southern Black Hills is one of the world’s longest caves. Swaying prairie grasses, forested hillsides, and an array of wildlife such as bison, elk, and prairie dogs welcome visitors to our country’s seventh-oldest national park and one of its few remaining intact prairies. Secreted beneath is one of the world’s longest caves, Wind Cave. Named for barometric winds at its entrance, this complex labyrinth of passages contains a unique formation – boxwork. American Indians of the area have known about the opening to Wind Cave and the winds that move in and out of it for centuries. It is a sacred place for many tribes. In 1881 Jesse and Tom Bingham were also attracted to the cave by the whistling noise of the air coming out of the cave. As the story goes, wind was blowing out of the cave entrance with such force that it blew off Tom's hat. A few days later when Jesse returned to show this phenomenon to some friends, he was surprised to find the wind had switched directions and his hat was sucked into the cave.

For all of the attractions out there the cost of $12 was really manageable in comparison for a tour of a cave that lasts just over an hour with a knowledgeable and patient ranger. The cave has many different aspects. A great one is known as BoxWork which is unique to caves but very cool to experience.

Outside the cave wild animals roam free so it was not uncommon to spot a herd of buffalo along the side of the road.

Cave Tours start at $10-$12 for a nice tour of the cave. Lots of Boxwork. Pretty cool history, The Fairgrounds tour was nice. We took a 4 and 7 year old.

Nice one hour tour of the cave. Works well with a trip to Hot Springs and Mammoth Site / Cascade Falls.

Make sure to go on one of the tours into the caves. The whole family loved the stop. Make sure to stop near the main entrance and watch the mass amounts of prairie dogs.

We went on the popular tour. Walked down about 300 stairs and then came up in a elevator. The box work is really interesting. Did not need a flashlight but would recommend a sweatshirt.
