“Artfully and passionately made beer and spirits”
The 1011 McGowen Street property was first reported in 1907 as a dwelling … a single-family residential home. At that time, it was located next to a large Roller Skating Rink – “Auditorium”, which fronted Main Street. This skating rink took up nearly half the block. The Houston Electric Co.’s streetcar line ran between Travis and Fannin on McGowen, which explains the concentration of business buildings in these blocks in what was otherwise a predominantly residential neighborhood. In 1915, the current on-site building was constructed, and soon thereafter, the first business is reported for the property – “Auditorium Grocery Company”. They were in operation at the site until the early 1940s. From there the property operated as a motor company/auto repair, a printing and stationary company, and a Post Office Branch. The Post Office Branch was the last tenant, and from the early 1980s the building remained vacant.
