“The Finest Surf Fishing Anywhere!”
A sweeping Grand Strand beach, pristine and wide open, stands as one of the most recognizable South Carolina landmarks. Revel in sea-breeze camping, the finest surf fishing South Carolina has to offer and some of the top bird-watching on the East Coast. That’s not all Huntington Beach State Park has to offer. There are also South Carolina landmarks such as Atalaya, the picturesque, Moorish-style winter home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington, philanthropist and sculptor, respectively, who left the park and adjacent Brookgreen Gardens as their legacy. Nature lovers also will enjoy the park’s Nature Center and wide variety of programming, including the chance to see loggerhead turtles and other endangered plant and animal species up close. The park’s freshwater lake is a sure-fire place to see alligators and sometimes even a mink or two. Pet-friendly, but remember to use a leash!

Confirmed by 10 users | Last reported on March 30, 2024We have camped here several times of the past few years. We stayed here for in the winter for 30-days in 2018. This is a jewel on the South Carolina coast. The beach, the walking trails, the marshes, inland lake are beautiful. The facilities are updated and clean. This one will not disappoint.

We held our March SC Coastal Airstream rally here. It could not have been a more suitable location. Our sites were well spaced under well established Live Oaks, level and with plenty of grassy areas for recreation. We were 100 yards fro the beach. We were provided with a pavilion that functioned well for our chapter meeting. Truly a spectacular location.

Big spaces, clean, and no long term campers make for a pleasant stay. Site 90 might be the last site to pick based on having no shade and other than the gravel for the camper, nothing else is flat. No real space to enjoy like the other sites.

(We actually stayed here last year (10/18/21) and I am going by my notes)
BEAUTIFUL Park!! Hard to get into. I was lucky and someone canceled while I was checking for a cancelation! Our neighbors were their friends and said they got Covid and had to cancel. Listed as one of the best sites at the park also! VERY LUCKY!
A short walk thru the woods on a path and you are at the beach. You can actually hear the waves crashing at night.
Lots of beautiful hikes. The salt marsh hike is lovely. We took a 4 mile hike and came upon a VERY large alligator!!!! The causeway is a good hangout spot. You'll see gator, fish jumping and several different birds. There are other hikes around town and lots of neat shopping areas. (Harborwalk, Marshwalk, etc,)
There are places to Kayak, but because of seeing that huge alligator, I chose not to. :)
Will DEFINITELY stay here again!!!

This is one of our favorite places to go. The rates are higher than most state parks, but there's also more there, beach, marsh, wildlife (especially birds!), hiking, Atalaya Castle, plus the fabulous Brookgreen Gardens right across the road. Our only downside on this trip were the bagworms in the trees around our site that made a mess on our roof.

I understand rising costs, perhaps even the 75% increase in 2022 to 2023. I understand 2024 price will increase to $80. With that increase should come improved and better services however this is not the case:
1) Bathroom showers are decreasing in hygiene, with hair & other debris left in the shower floor despite being the first one in there after cleaning. This happened 2 of the 3x I took a shower. 2) Staff had been previously good about making sure campers departed at noon. This time we were moving from one site to another directly next to us. At noon, the campers who were supposed to depart started to prepare lunch, finally departing at 1:30. This despite the fact that we informed the hosts who drove by in carts. Another cart driven by a ranger drove by 3 times & didn’t stop to inquire about urge campers to get along. 3) More trash & debris in sites than we’ve ever seen (this is our 8th stay).
So if the price is to increase almost 100%, then be prepared to up your attention to campground.

We had a wonderful stay at HBSP and would recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, easy-to-access, affordable, on-the-beach campground. The campground is split between the north and the south (5 minute walk between the two). We stayed on the north campground and found most sites were spacious and well maintained. Most have electric and water, although some in the north are also full hookups. We stayed on site 123 and thought it exceptionally quiet and well shaded. The south campground is all full hookups, but the sites are much closer together (think KOA / commercial campground layout). Still very pleasant with its own direct beach access, but we preferred the space in the north. The beach is a very short walk along dedicated access points. There’s a lovely gift shop, and a variety of walks / state park activities. We immediately booked to return!

We stayed here in February and we’re super happy. It’s just very hard to find a free spot on a short planning horizon. Bathrooms were pleasant. Short, easy walk to the beach on a concrete slab; Wide, empty beaches and a park like, widely spaced campground.
I can recommend lee’s farmers market for outstanding meets, cheese and other hard to get foods.

Site 123 has nice screening even from the bathroom that it's across from. Also had excellent Wifi service being close to the bathroom. Good for Zoom meetings. We used the WiFi as it was much better than Verizon.
Site 76 has no screening, a tiny bit of shade, though not over the pad nor over the picnic table. Most sites in this area had little shade.
At the end of April campground was full and quiet. Bathrooms and showers clean and functional. Outstanding access to beach from both North and South campgrounds.
WiFi also available at tables with power outlets near visitor center. Very nice playground. A few short trails in the woods. Great wildlife viewing for alligators and water birds along causeway in and out of park.
Note: no sites have beach view, there is screening all the way along.
