“snuggled at the base of scenic Aspen Mountains”
This Preserve, established by the Nature Conservancy and the Bureau of Land Management, protects crystal clear pools and a unique wetland complex at the base of scenic Aspen Mountains. The cold springs that feed the terraced pools and creek system deposit high concentration of travertine (calcium carbonate), which gives the sites its unique geology. The spring water has been determined to be 13,000 years old. Perhaps the most impressive physical feature is Formation Cave, which is almost 10 feet tall at the entrance and 200 feet long. The ponds attract numerous waterfowl. On the Preserve look for mule deer, raptors, and numerous songbirds. Turn onto the paved Trail Canyon Road and drive approximately one mile east to a "buck and pole" fence along the north side of the road. Turn into the entrance road to Formation Springs parking lot. Park and proceed on foot to the spring area and travertine formation. Tread Lightly Please!
There are few formations left and there are no clear walking paths. The navigation is off by 1/4 mile so follow driving signs.
