“short 0.3 mile hike to the springs”

The Umpqua Hot Springs Trail is a short 0.3 mile hike to the springs. A "tub" 3 x 5 x 2.5 feet deep is hewn out of the travertine deposits surrounding the springs. Use is very high and nudity is common. The springs, at a temperature of 108 degrees, is located on a bare rock face 150 feet above the North Umpqua River. From the tub, there is a view of Surprise Falls across the river and A primitive composting toilet is located adjacent to the springs. No motorized use on this trail due to poor condition of trail and high risk of accidents and resource damage. There is a toilet in the parking lot and to the left of the bridge there are two campsites with picnic tables. Directions from Roseburg: Travel east on Highway 138 and turn north onto Road 34, the west entrance to Toketee Ranger Station. At the bottom of the hill turn left across the two concrete bridges. Proceed 2.2 miles and turn right onto Road 3401. Proceed another .7 miles to a parking area on the left. The parking area will accommodate six vehicles and a Northwest Forest Pass is required to park at this trailhead. Cross the foot bridge over the North Umpqua River to the trail. Turn right, proceed .1 miles to a junction. Turn to the right and start to climb a steep narrow trail for .2 miles. There is another fork; turn to the right and start to climb a steep narrow trail for .2 miles. There is another fork; turn uphill to the left. The hot springs are under a covered shelter.

Go at sunrise before the crowds. It's worth it. Kind of a challenging vertical hike too.

This is a beautiful spot, in the side of a rock face over looking the river! The last 2.0 mile of the drive is on a gravel road, not bad, but several pot holes to negotiate and variable width. The hike has a bit of a steep rocky climb (not meant for flip flops). This is a "day use area", so closed dusk to dawn. I might suggest a morning visit, where the tub water might be more clear, we hit this spot in the late evening and the water was a bit murky. There are several natural "tubs". The hot spring directly feeds the highest of the tubs, with natural veins trickling down to the lower tubs, so the lower tubs aren't as hot, but hoses are available to help feed hot spring water more directly into the lower tubs, if you are willing to work it. The tubs are shallow and naturally formed, so work a bit to find a comfortable spot to lay back and enjoy! Bring water.
