This zoo is quite large and has enough flora and fauna to keep your interest for a full day. The walking Safari is a unique way to see how so many species interact in a large, open area. Don't walk past the aviaries! While the animals are breathtaking, most people seem to overlook the thoughtful and incredible landscaping and numerous themed gardens that are placed seamlessly throughout the walking areas of the zoo. There are also several interactive areas for children (splash park, learning center etc) and after a long day of walking and watching, you can catch the train and ride around the park once more and back to the entrance. If you enjoy the zoo as much as my husband and I do, the annual membership is worth every penny and gets you discounts for the train, food, Stingray Bay (stingray petting area?) and also access to members only events throughout the year.
My family and I have been to the Jacksonville Zoo several times. We loved it enough to buy a Membership to the park. They are always building new attractions and adding more animals, so there is always something new to see when we visit. Their new Tiger exhibit is really cool, the tigers walk above your head. I wish the African animals were a bit closer so we could take better pictures. You pretty much have to ride the train to get a good view of them. The Jaguar exhibit is probably the best because of the all the statues and "lost temples" you can explore. It's really beautiful. My kids love the water park they added, there's a squirt park type thing where your kids can play in the water and cool off in the hot Florida sun. Always make sure your kids have their bathing suits on under their clothes and bring sunblock and towels! Close buy to it are plenty of tables and seating, restaurants, snow cones, petting zoo and penguins. There's also a park with a large slide and lots of climbing around the corner as well as the spider monkey exhibit. It took us two full days to explore this entire zoo. I still think we missed a few things. They have a lot of cool large snakes too if reptiles are your thing. Don't forget to check out Florida exhibits and see our local creatures up close and personal. The zoo membership gets you into the alligator farm, aquarium, and several other attractions as well. Worth the money for sure.
