“thousands of acres of protected highlands”

Monadnock State Park is located in and around the 3,165-ft. Mount Monadnock. The park is surrounded by thousands of acres of protected highlands. In 1987, Mount Monadnock was designated a National Natural Landmark. The park offers year-round recreational opportunities. Monadnock State Park is open year-round unless closed or restricted by posting. While the staff is present around the park daily, limited visitor services and amenities are provided and day-use fees are required through the winter season only on weekends and holidays.  The Gilson Pond Campground is open from May 10th through October 27th. Out of state firewood is prohibited, but firewood is available to purchase at the park.   Family camping from October 28th through the winter and early Spring is available at Monadnock Headquarters on a first come, first serve basis only.   Youth Group camping is only available at Monadnock HQ and must be arranged by reservation by calling 1-877-647-2757 for stays between Memorial Day and Columbus Day. Off season youth group camping reservations can be made by calling Monadnock State Park directly.

If climbing a mountain is on you bucket list, you might want to take a look at Mt Monadnock (it's one of the most climbed mountains in the world). It's about a 3-4 hour round-trip to the summit, all of which can be done on foot. I would highly recommend the experience. The main trail can be hiked by children and families, but you might travel a bit slower. From what I remember, the trips I took as a child took about 3 hours each way.

We stayed at the Mt Monadnock Gilson Pond Campground and it was great. The facilities were clean, the store was well stocked and the sites were well positioned. Tent sites had a platform to place the tent on. Monadnock is a steep climb and there are boulder fields, so plan to get your heart rate going!
