“The second oldest barbecue in Georgia”
Dean's 1947 roadside Q shack is the second oldest barbecue establishment in Georgia. Dean's also has the only outside Q pit in the Atlanta area. When the city of Jonesboro outlawed the use of outside barbecue pits, Dean's pit was luckily grandfathered in. Dean's cooks only fresh hams. The hams are pit-cooked over a blend of 90% oak and 10% hickory. My sweet tea was just right and my pulled pork sandwich with its two pickles was outstanding! The vinegar based sweet and tangy Q sauce was also equally outstanding. You can eat in their concrete floored dinning area or outside on the picnic tables under the pecan trees. For dessert, a dime will get you a gumball from the machine. They are closed Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. They only take cash. Credit and debit cards are not accepted.
seriously no frills building, but just go inside and give the food a try. Far surpasses the exterior and is totally worth it. Honestly, it's kind of like time traveling a bit, so you have to get in the right/accepting mindset to really get the entire experience.
A menu (which hangs about the register) highlight : "Tea: Sweet, Yankee or Mason-Dixon." For the post civil war types out there in this 2014 world, Yankee doesn't have any suger and Mason-Dixon is half sweet. Fun, hey?
