“a labyrinth of uniqueness”
Designed to house the portfolio of interior decorator and artist, Jule Gilmer Körner, the 131-year-old Körner’s Folly is a labyrinthine tribute to one man’s unique architectural vision. Located in historic downtown Kernersville, Körner's Folly was built from 1878-1880. Körner's Folly now has 22 rooms located on 7 levels with 15 fireplaces. Located on the top level is one of the first private little theaters built in the US. Throughout the house you will see murals on almost every ceiling, elaborately carved woodwork, numerous cast-plaster details, and original furnishings.
You can watch the introductory video when you buy your tickets. It includes clips of a weird/creepy puppet show which is apparently put on for kids to teach them the history of the town. The house has a lot of color and such a great layout! In its day its owners hosted a lot of activities and events that made their home a social center for the town. They have free parking on site.
I loved this unique find. Roadtrippers suggested this on our route and it took us approx 1 hour to walk through the large home. The history of the Folly was very interesting, but the architecture was really the focal point of this stop. Lots of opportunities for pictures and questions for the attentive staff. There was even a scavenger hunt to follow along with as you walked through each room. Tix for adults were $12. I would recommend stopping by to see this place!
Our last name is Koerner so when we saw this little place on the Roadtrippers map we decided to stop. So glad we did! It is a fascinating tour! Lots of original furniture and antiques. It’s very weird and you have to follow directions or you’ll get lost or miss some rooms. Definitely worth checking out if you are in the area! 😃
