“honors the famous fairytale”
In 1974, the Progressive Danes of Kimballton bought a mermaid statue sculpted in cold cast bronze by two college students in Modesto, CA. This statue is a replica of the famous Little Mermaid that stands in the Copenhagen harbor and honors the famous storyteller H.C. Andersen's fairytale "The Little Mermaid". For twenty years, the Little Mermaid statue sat on her rock. As she started to deteriorate, new funds were solicited to have her recast in bronze. In 2008, the statue and the H.C. Andersen park were rededicated during Kimballton's Quasquicentennial Celebration.
The drive west on 44 to this is beautiful!! Loved this stop! The little mermaid statue is in a fountain, but they didn't have water in it :/ There were also other little statues of various fairy tales around the mermaid. Each of them have a phone number posted that you can dial, enter the number of the statue you're at and you can listen to a recording of the fairy tale (which comes in handy if you aren't familiar with some of them, like The Tinder Box)! Too fun, there was another couple there to see the statue as well, so it is fun for adults, but kids would have a blast too. There's a playground and park right behind the statues for the kiddos :)
Love the park and all of the statues. Was a nice place to stop and stretch
A great stop if you're passing through! Listen to the audio history of the fountain, located at the left entrance, and marvel at the other Hans Christian Andersen-themed sculptures.
