“come see our 'touch tank'”
Sea Center Texas is a marine aquarium, fish hatchery and nature center operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD). The site’s visitor center educates through interpretive displays, a “touch tank” and aquariums depicting native Texas habitats including a salt marsh, jetty, reef and open Gulf exhibits. The Gulf aquarium houses nurse sharks, large red drum, gray snapper, Atlantic spadefish, and the state record moray eel. The center offers a variety of educational programs that promote the wise use and conservation of Texas' marine resources. Touch TankThe facility operates one of the three TPWD marine hatcheries located on the Texas coast that produce juvenile red drum and spotted speckled trout to stock in Texas bays. The hatchery has the capability to produce up to 15 million juvenile fish each year.
Even though Lake Jackson doesn't have something that spectacular that is worth visiting or stopping there, nevertheless if you do so or plan to visit this area, then according to my opinion, the best place to check out is definitely the Sea Center.
Great job done by volunteers where you can experience the magical world of aquariums for FREE. But i would suggest you to leave some money, because you will realize that people working there are very professional and friendly and certainly the end result is great. If you have kids, then visit the so-called 'touch' tank where kids will have the opportunity to touch little water creatures. Great fun combined with education! Well done guys!
This is a great little fun place. It includes a petting tank and several other tanks showing fish in our area including a couple of nurse sharks and a huge eel. My kids favorite is walking the pier that is also next to a butterfly garden that is home to many caterpillars and butterflies each year. It typically takes 30 minutes to an hour to see the tanks. It's free fun (although leaving a donation is one of my kids' favorite parks) we typically spend an hour or so on the pier.
We were staying at Serendipity RV Park and decided to take a drive up to Lake Jackson to see the Sea Center and then have lunch down in Surf Side. Lake Jackson is very small and doesn't have a lot to see but I will tell you, we had a very good time at the Sea Center. It is run by volunteers who really care about their jobs and entertaining you with information about what the Sea Center does. They are great! We did not tour the hatchery because it was raining but we totally enjoyed our trip!! It is really worth the visit!!
What's better than a free thing to do! The people there are super friendly and the fish are pretty cool to look at. They even have yours you can go on.
