“featuring a gorgeous cypress swamp!”
Freshwater wetlands once covered a large portion of southwestern Sussex County. Trap Pond State Park retains a part of the swamp's original beauty and mystery, and features the northernmost natural stand of baldcypress trees in the United States. The pond was created in the late 1700s to power a sawmill during the harvest of large baldcypress from the area. The Federal Government later purchased the pond and surrounding farmland during the 1930s and the Civilian Conservation Corps began to develop the area for recreation. Trap Pond became one of Delaware's first state parks in 1951. Visitors have many opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the wetland forest. Hiking trails surround the pond, providing opportunities to glimpse native animal species and many flowering plants. Birdwatching is a popular activity and the observant hiker may spot a Great Blue Heron, owl, hummingbird, warbler, Bald Eagle or the elusive Pileated Woodpecker.

Confirmed by 2 users | Last reported on April 16, 2022When we pulled up I was excited to see excited to see that Delaware State parks had won some national award for "Gold Medal of Excellence." I don't think campground layout was part of the judging.
In all fairness, the campground provided what we were looking for in a stop for the night, namely electric hook-ups. After a long hot loud night at our last place we wanted both the coolness and background noise of the ac. The 30 amp hook-ups provided that.
Besides the electricity, other positives were water hook-ups at the site, very clean sites, clean enough bath house with free showers, and friendly staff and campground hosts. There was also one washer ($2/load) and dryer ($1.50/load) with a sign to use liquid detergent only. A dump station is available. Finally, a free bicycle loaner program that we didn't use, but seems like a nice idea.
The disappointing part of the campground is the layout. Three of the loops (A, B, and C) are back in sites that are all close together. There are a lot of trees around, but no privacy and a lot of closeness. Loop D had pull through crescent shaped sites which were slightly better than the other loops, but still close together. Large rigs, Class A, large trailers or long 5th wheels would be to long for Loop D. All of these loops had electric and water. A final area was a tent camping area without electric and water. I didn't check out that area. There are also cabins available.
The campground was pretty loud in the evening sounding like a children's carnival. At least the kids were laughing and having fun but it was still going well past quiet hours.
We camped in Aug 2016.

Stayed here 3/31/2018 with a reservation. Good thing as park was full for the weekend. Our site faced into the woods and was a drive thru loop. Loop was a little tight but space was unlimited on side away from road. Had 30 amp & water. Not much privacy for the sites on the inside of the loop. They have 2 dump stations and sell firewood.
Men's bathhouse was under repair only one shower of three working.
Would be a good place early or late in the season. Open all year I think.
This place had lots of dogs and children (more dogs)

We went here after going to the Delaware beaches. It's not too far of a drive, and the next day we took another short drive to Ocean City Maryland.
It's a nice rustic park that you can kayak on the lake. The sites are a bit close together, but our site had some good privacy.
We came in at night which they allow (unlike some other parks which close the gates at a certain time) but had a problem. It was very dark, and we ended up swiping a small stump which was next to our electric hookup. Better signage would have helped us avoid it IMHO.

Went here in the fall. Very pretty lake and kid friendly playground. Beware there was lots of mud here and some sites are too close together. A little busy and noisey campground.

We camped here in a 40’ 5th wheel. Site more and accommodate our 5 slides and 50amp service.
When traveling in from route 13 take laurel Rd to Trap Pond to Gooseneck this approach will make it easier to make the right turn into park.

We went during the week and there were few campers around (including empty sites adjacent to ours), but a lot of folks use the facilities during the day.
Many paved roadways for cycling, but also some dirt paths and trails for hiking. A fishing area is located within the camping area.
The sites are wooded and provide relief from the sun. We had been told that the bugs were an issue, but our family had no complaints during our stay.

Sites are fairly spacious and have an interesting semi-circle pull through layout so backing in not required. They are not level and have a sandy base so it took a bit of work to finally get the rig level, even with auto-levelers. There are a short to moderate hiking trails and the pond is popular for kayaks. Being near the water means the bugs really came out at night so make sure to turn off the outside lights after dark. Sites have 30A electric and water with a nearby convenient dump station.

Stayed in Trap Pond for a feeler night. It's close by and we had been to the Park before. Spot on the D Loop was easy to access with our 30'. Sites have 30 Amp hook up w/ water and seem spacious (first timer). Our area was nicely wooded, had water views from the site and easy access to the pond with a kayak launch. Pet friendly, Bailey Jean and James Bond enjoyed the views. Overall a great place to dip the toes.

We stayed at the park for our second trip with our 38’ Class A motorhome and it was great! Stayed in the A loop and enjoyed the canoe and kayak rentals, fished and also utilized the free bike rental too. The bald cypress trees are so beautiful and it was breathtaking to kayak through them. We can’t wait to plan a return trip!
