Historic General Lewis Inn

The Historic General Lewis Inn is a unique blend of the old and the new, created and operated by the Hock Family since 1929.  The eastern end of the building, including the dining room, the kitchen and a suite of rooms on the first and second floors, was a brick residence built in the early 1800′s by John Withrow.  The main section and the western wing of the Inn were designed by Walter Martens, a well-known West Virginia architect who also designed the Governor’s Mansion in Charleston.  The Hock family spent many years gathering antiques from Greenbrier and adjoining counties to furnish the Inn.  Spool and canopy beds, chests of drawers, china, glass, old prints and other memorabilia are throughout the Inn. All of the guest rooms are furnished with antiques.   Memory Hall displays tools and articles used by early settlers.  The Doll House in the garden is a miniature of life in the 1800′s. Lewisburg is nestled in the broad rolling Greenbrier Valley, surrounded by lush evergreen and maple covered mountains, blending a unique mixture of natural and man-made beauty.  Nearby streams and rivers provide superb fishing, canoeing and whitewater rafting.  State Parks and National Forests offer walks through ferns, flowers, rhododendron and mountain laurel.  Area golf courses skirt both mountains and streams. For the history buff, Lewisburg offers sites associated with both the Revolutionary and Civil wars.  Gracious homes, spanning the years and their varied architecture in soft red brick or frame, many with large porches reminiscent of a more leisurely life, can be seen by walking along many of the tree-lined streets. The 1929 inn is said to be haunted by at least three ghosts. The most well known is a Lady in White who haunts Room 208. Her identity is unknown, a portrait of her hangs in the room. Also residing here is the ghost of a slave named Reuben, rumored to have been hanged in the area that is now the dining room. His apparition has been seen sitting at a dining room table. And a third ghost here is a little girl who has been seen in Room 202 and has been heard crying and laughing in Rooms 206 and 208.
