Chatfield State Park Campground

Before life on the road I was a Denver gal so I find myself visiting the Mile High City fairly regularly. My park of choice when visiting is usually Cherry Creek SP but for this trip they were booked solid. I had heard good things about Chatfield so here I am.

First of all, Chatfield is a little far from Denver proper to be a great base. It is about 40 minutes to downtown Denver. It would be a fantastic base if you are going to be staying south of town. It offers easy access to the Chatfield lake, is close to the beautiful Roxborourgh SP and many hiking opportunities in SW Denver.

The campground itself is dated. It really needs an overhaul but I was happy with the sites. They are paved, level and organized in a way that gives you space from your neighbor. I would highly recommend taking a look at the map when picking a site and get one that is facing the water.

We stayed at Chatfield SP for two weeks shortly after staying at nearby Cherry Creek SP for two weeks, so drawing comparisons is inevitable. Chatfield gets high marks for offering full hookups and level, concrete sites for only $30/night. There are lots of paved trails for biking and walking, and we never ran out of places to walk our dog from the campground (including walking him down to the lake for a swim). Although the park has great views of the nearby mountains, we found the park scenery itself to be pretty bland--very few trees, mostly just open fields. Of the four camping loops, we found that the sites in A, B, and C were fairly close together. We chose D loop which has much larger and more private sites. Although we saw a strong signal from the campground WiFi we were never able to get connected. Our Verizon and AT&T both hovered around 1-2 bars of signal so we switched on our cell booster for better speeds. The fenced 70-acre dog park ($2/day or $20/year) is very nice, with paved walking trails and several small lakes for dogs to swim in. It's on the other side of the State Park though, which means a 7-mile drive from the campground, around the lake, on 25 MPH roads, so plan on 15 minutes each way to get to the dog park. The park roads are generally good, but some sections are new and wide with bike lanes, and some sections are old and narrow, so you WILL be driving slowly behind bicyclists pretty often. It also takes at least 15 minutes to exit the park and get to the nearest stores. Despite these drawbacks it's a very nice park and we'll likely return.

This is a great campground! Sites are well spread out and have nice bushes and/or trees to provide privacy. There is no road noise. Slightly annoying noise from the nearby RC Airfield...sounds like 1,000 bees flight above at times but not enough to cause us to not come back here. There is a great dog park within the park, but it is about a 10 minute drive from the campground.
There are many water sports available with rentals. Great trails for hiking and biking.
Sites are level with cement pads and nice grassy areas.
Also has great paved paths accessible from the campground.
Never had any issues with loud neighbors even on week-ends.
Easy access to nearby stores and restaurants as well as getting up I-70 to head to the mountains.
One of those top-notch campgrounds!

We brought our brand new hybrid travel trailer to Chatfield for our maiden voyage. We wanted a place close to home, where we could try everything out and learn how to work everything. It was a perfect first trip! The sites are clean, hookups we're easy on arrival and departure. Our site had a nice view of the Lake, and was a short walk to a great playground. You can see city lights at night, and houses during the day, so it's not exactly ideal Colorado scenery, but it's still pretty, it's still camping! We never used the public restrooms, so we don't know how clean or nice they are. There are various trees, shrubs and native grasses all over the campground, but none of the campsites themselves have any shade. We camped in mid Apr, 2017, so it was cool, but in the summer you would need to bring shade. The site are very level, and concrete, but around the concrete and at the tent pads, it is peagravel over dirt. It had rained the first night, so got pretty muddy, but other than that the sites are really in good condition. The Fire rings have grills that swing on and off the fire.

We really loved this park, and would stay again just for all the bike trails. If you're using it as a base for visiting Denver, be prepared to drive though. You're about 45 minutes from the city, which isn't a big deal if you're not doing it every day, but it's a grind if you need or want to be in the city much.

Stayed here about a week while visiting family. Park is very clean, we were there in the winter so it was very quiet. We stayed on the edge of the campground, our site looked out over an RC plane field so you could hear the wind coming across the land which was eerie/cool. Each site has well maintained concrete, picnic table, and fire ring. It looked like there were a few long term people there. Bathrooms were also very clean, but you had to pay for showers! $.25 per 1.5 minutes! That makes it a 4 star park instead of a 5 star. Check in was a little weird, we reserved a site online and arrived after the park was closed, so we just drove in and set up camp, no one ever came to check to see if we had paid. We ended up staying a few extra nights and went to the ranger station to pay, we found out we were supposed to check in the day after we arrived. We probably could have stayed the extra days and no one would have noticed.

One of the only full hook-up campgrounds open in winter close to the Denver area. About thirty minutes from downtown and plenty of amenities close by. Also close to a couple good trail systems. Common building with laundry, showers and bathrooms.

This was a local trip for us, but the first time we've camped here. The spots are concrete paved and our spot was perfectly flat. Beautiful views of the Front Range with a wide open field on the other side. Full hookups and nice and close to the facilities (laundry and bathroom). Lots of space between the space in the D loop.

In 2018 full hookup was $30 plus $1 for park entrance. In 2019 full hookup jumped to $41 and park entrance increased to $9 per day. Daily camp fee went from $31 to $50 - 60% increase!! We got to the gate and paid the fee and asked for a map. No campground map, just a park map with no details about the 4 camp loops. We asked which site we were in and were told they had no information and we were supposed to setup on our site. He said the site would be in our email. Employee was very friendly. The sites are paved (concrete), but ours was not even close to level. The bath houses have no soap, no paper towels or hand dryers - not a big deal just saying. Showers are 50 cents - not sure how long it lasts - we didn’t use them since we had full hookup. Our information said quiet time was 10:00. It was extremely loud until 11:00. The roads around Denver are horrible - construction everywhere. Not a lot of options in this area, so this may be the best option. We would not stay here again. Extra star for the views.

We live in Littleton and love going to Chatfield State Park for fishing, running and tent camping. This was our first time with a camper with full hookups and our stay was very comfortable. Site is very clean, easy to pull into as it was a pull through site. Showers, restrooms and laundry is within walking distance.
