“seeking to inspire curiosity about visual art”
The J. Paul Getty Museum seeks to inspire curiosity about, and enjoyment and understanding of the visual arts by collecting, conserving, exhibiting and interpreting works of art of outstanding quality and historical importance. To fulfill this mission, the Museum continues to build its collections through purchase and gifts, and develops programs of exhibitions, publications, scholarly research, public education, and the performing arts that engage our diverse local and international audiences. All of these activities are enhanced by the uniquely evocative architectural and garden settings provided by the Museum's two renowned venues: the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum on display in the galleries at the Getty Center includes examples of pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs. The Getty Villa houses the J. Paul Getty Museum's collection of approximately 44,000 Greek, Roman, and Etruscan antiquities. Over 1,200 works are on view in 23 galleries devoted to the permanent collection, with five additional galleries for changing exhibitions.
This place is awesome... so much to see and for free... you are also treated to an unbeatable view of the city from it's perch :)
The Architecture alone is something worth experiencing with beautiful views of the city as well as the ocean. The exhibits are very well curated. It's a wonderful trip all around and you can certainly spend the entire day there soaking it all in.
great little museum .. very modern and nice
If you see the Getty Villa and Getty Center on the same day (except Monday's I think) you only have to pay for parking once.
The Getty Center is a wonderful (and FREE) place to visit! There is a charge for parking. My children enjoyed the tram ride up to the museum grounds. There is a great deal of variety here; paintings, sculptures, mosaics, old Bibles, the list goes on and on. The view of L.A. from the upper floors is just incredible! My entire family enjoyed our visit here. We visited the Getty Villa on the same day and found the Getty Center to be far more impressive. Definitely worth your time, a wonderful day trip!
Excellent way to spend the day. And it's free!
