“Home of the Lakers, Clippers, Kings”
Staples Center is a multi-purpose sports arena in Downtown Los Angeles. Adjacent to the L.A. Live development, it is located next to the Los Angeles Convention Center complex along Figueroa Street. Opening on October 17, 1999, it is one of the major sporting facilities in the Greater Los Angeles Area. It is owned and operated by the L.A. Arena Company and Anschutz Entertainment Group. The arena is home to the Los Angeles Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Los Angeles Sparks of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The Los Angeles Avengers of the Arena Football League (AFL) and the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA D-League were also tenants until both franchises were discontinued; the D-Fenders moved to the Lakers' practice facility at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, California for the 2011–12 season. Staples Center is also host to over 250 events and nearly 4,000,000 guests a year.
I've been to several Lakers, Clippers, and Kings games. The whole area around the arena has undergone a massive transformation much to the benefit of all visitors! If you are going to a game or concert at Staples, I would recommend eating at LA Live across the street. Because so many bands and artists are based in LA, there are lot to great opportunities to see shows when you are passing through Southern California, either at Staples or at Nokia Theater and the more intimate auditorium at Nokia.
Laker games are still extremely expensive. As in all big arenas food is extremely expensive as well. Kings games are great. Many are surprised to see a professional hockey team have such a diehard following in Southern California.
I've only been to the Staples Center once and it was for the X-Games but I thought it was a great arena. It seems like it would be a fantastic place to see a concert, hockey game and of course a basketball game. The arena was clean, well-maintained and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. I'd imagine tickets for a Lakers game are super expensive but it would definitely be a great experience- hope to do it soon!
