“17,000 years of human habitation”

Welcome to Ocmulgee National Monument this park is a memorial to the relationship of people and natural resources.  Native Americans first came here during the Paleo-Indian period hunting Ice Age mammals. Different cultures occupied this land for thousands of years.  The Mississippian culture arrived here around 900 constructing mounds for their elite. Today the mounds still remain for all to see.

This place is AMAZING! If you like Anthropology or Sociology or just good human history, this is a great learning experience. You can stroll out onto the lands, see the mounds, go in them, climb on them. I will never forget this visit.

If there's nothing else to do, this can be an interesting adventure into prehistory. That said, you're not going to see much besides the one structure. The rest is just giant dirt mounds covered with grass and weeds.

This is a rarely talked about subject in American History classes in school! You can learn about, see, climb on, and go inside of ancient ruins dating back to the last ice age. A very rare opportunity to see beautiful earthworks from ancient peoples in the United States. Definitely worth the stop in! Wear your walking shoes.

So much history here and I wish we would have allowed more time for it so we could have taken our time.

The park rangers are so kind and informative! I loved going here. They span the whole human history of the area. The museum is wonderful, there is a mound you can go in and see the reconstruction of what they think it looked like (based on evidence). You can also walk on top of a few of the mounds which the view is amazing!
