“excellent example of a wealthy Victorian home”
On October 8, 1871, the same day as the Great Chicago Fire and fires throughout the Midwest, more than half of the city of Manistee burned. Within a year, the wooden buildings that had been destroyed were replaced by brick structures, many of which were designed by famous architects of that period. Built in 1881, the Babcock House is an interesting example of eclecticism in late Victorian architecture. Opulent interior and working gas lighting, excellent example of the homes of wealthy Victorians. Open year round for tours by appointment only and a minimum of four people.
This Victorian Historic home is still owned by the Babcock family- they have kept the lower story of the home in "museum-like" shape, keeping everything original. It was built by one of the original logging tycoons of the late 19th century. He really wanted to show off his wood craft skills by making all the original doors in the building 10' tall-which can still be seen today, with many other unique wooden features. Try visiting during Manistee's "Parade of Homes" tour.
