“helping sick sea turtles swim again”
The Turtle Hospital opened its doors 1986 with four main goals: 1) rehab injured sea turtles and return them to their natural habitat, 2) educate the public through outreach programs and visit local schools, 3) conduct and assist with research aiding to sea turtles (in conjunction with state universities), and 4) work toward environmental legislation making the beaches and water safe and clean for sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital (Hidden Harbor Marine Environmental Project, Inc.) is a 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. The Hidden Harbor Motel provides the space and buildings needed to house and care for the sea turtles. The Turtle Hospital offers Guided Educational Experiences to the public daily 7 days a week. Please call 305-743-2552 for further information and reservations. The Turtle Hospital contains up-to-date equipment needed to perform a variety of surgeries on different species and sizes of sea turtles. More than half of this equipment has been donated by local hospitals and doctors, and some equipment has been donated by environmentally- friendly organizations and individuals.
I loved my trip to the turtle hospital. We had a great tour guide, Jerry, who made our tour both educational and fun. We learned about the different kinds of sea turtles and got to see the operation rooms where they are saved. Then we got to go and see the turtles in rehabilitation. It was a ton of fun!
If you want to visit here, I highly recommend staying at Isla Bella - only about a half-mile away.
Turtles from all over the Keys and even mainland Florida are brought here for rehab and surgery. You can even watch a surgery being performed, so check with the Turtle Hospital for their surgery schedule.
My family loved this place. We should have called and bought tickets in advance. It was very interesting and engaging.
We loved LOVEF this place! Awesome tour!
Great tour by a knowledgeable and passionate host
I took this tour with my 6 year old daughter and we both loved it. I honestly didn't think she'd last the whole tour but she was totally enchanted. The length of the tour might give you pause (I was totally skeptical that there was even 60 minutes of anything worthwhile there) but it is so interesting and the turtle are just a lot of fun to see. Well worth a stop.
