“Resting on a high bluff!”
Step into U.S. military history at Fort Flagler Historical State Park on the northern tip of Marrowstone Island. Tour and explore a significant coastal defense fort established more than a century ago to guard the entrance to Puget Sound. Built in the late 1890s and manned during World War I, World War II and the Korean War, Fort Flagler now features a military museum and gift shop. The park offers guided tours of the gun emplacements and the 1905 military hospital during the summer. Or find the batteries on your own, and wander through them at leisure. Fort Flagler activities include hiking, boating, kite-flying, beach exploration, saltwater fishing, clam digging and crabbing. Experienced paragliders can bring their wings and ride thermals up to stupendous aerial views. The onsite camps Hoskins, Richmond and Wilson are available for retreats of up to 250 people, and historic officers’ houses can be booked for group gatherings and romantic getaways. Beachfront tent and RV sites boast some of the best views in the region. So gaze out on the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the north, the Olympic Peninsula to the west and Whidbey Island to the east, and breathe deep of the ocean air. The group of forts once known as the “Triangle of Fire” (made up of Fort Flagler, Fort Worden and Fort Casey) is a must-see for military, armament and maritime enthusiasts. Fort Flagler’s off-the-beaten track location and its wide, manicured former parade lawns make it a winning destination.

Overall we enjoyed the campground, it was very clean, hook-ups worked great, and there was lots of exploring to do within walking distance of our site, from beach exploring to checking out all of the old batteries and history of Fort Flagler.
The cons for us was the wind and most of the campsites were anything but private or secluded. Our site was very close to our neighbors, as were most of them at the lower area which is where the full hook up were. If you were going as a group or with multiple families this was perfect, but if you want privacy this wasn't it.
There is also a junior ranger program for the kiddos, which I enjoyed working on with my 7-1/2 year old.

This place is amazing! Trees, views aplenty, salt water, beach to walk on, amazing sunsets, trails, nice camp sites, clean restrooms, recycle bins, place to wash dishes, a real fort, and even Beachcomber Cafe (open during the summer months)!
The upper campground is in the forest and the lower campground is near the beach. Most sites in the lower campground have at least a partial view of the water.
Showers have amazing water pressure, 2 tokens for $1, each token is for three minutes.

One of the best state park campgrounds I’ve ever visited. It can be a little noisy during busy times. But the best part is that even when it is busy, the park itself does not feel overcrowded. There’s plenty of room to spread out especially if you want to hike the magnificent trails.

One of the gems of the Washington State Parks system. Stunning scenery, gorgeous forest trails, eagles, osprey, chipmunks, lots of deer, old military bunkers to explore. Incredible views of the Olympic Mountains and Mt Baker. Two or three bars of T-Mobile LTE.

The quieter of the two State Parks near Port Townsend. Lower beach area is open year around with sewer and electric. Water is off at the sites from November to April but is available at one site. Lots of trails to walk, nice beach access. Spectacular views of Mt. Baker and the north Cascades, Olympics and water. Beach sites can accomodate large rigs. Short drive to Port Townsend. Lots of history at the old gun batteries.

I've been taking my son to Fort Flagler for several years now. We go once or twice a year. It is the perfect campground for kids.
It has 2 main camping areas, lower and upper. Lower campground is better suited in general for RVs. It has little tree cover and there is more wind down there. Upper campground has heavy tree cover which keeps your site and tent cool during the day.
There is a general store on site that sells firewood, ice cream, burgers/hotdogs/etc, kites, canned food, drinks, and lots more. It is a great resource. Nearby is a kids playground too. Around this area is plenty of open space which is perfect for kite flying.
There is plenty of beach to comb, some on the Kilisut Harbor side, and some in the Admiralty Inlet. Kilisut Harbor is cold, but protected and is a pretty good option for boating/kayaking.
One of this campgrounds best features are the trails, suitable for hiking and bicycling. On these trails you'll see deer, and they lead to amazing views of the surrounding areas. What's more, there are WW1 and WW2 bunkers and batteries to check out, which my kid just loves. Bicycling is probably our favorite activity when camping here.
A day trip to Port Townsend is nice. Be sure to stop by for ice cream at Elevated Ice Cream Co & Candy Shop. I highly recommend the orange and swiss chocolate flavor.
For many people, driving to Fort Flagler involves a ferry ride, which is a nice part of the trip too.
The only downside I've ever experienced is loud noises at night from something outside the campground. We're not sure if it is wind on the cliffs or planes from military exercises. We don't hear it every stay, and never two nights in a row.
