“excellent habitat for wildlife”

McAllen Botanical Gardens contains the largest and oldest tract of native forest remaining in the McAllen metropolitan area. Its mature trees and dense understory provide excellent habitat for wildlife, including dozens of species of birds, and two endangered and protected Texas species, the indigo snake and the horned lizard. The Botanical Garden also features specimen gardens, a streamside habitat with towering trees, and a wonderfully diverse wildflower meadow filled almost year round with butterflies and dragonflies.
