Historic Treasure

Our Take

This is a must-see for anyone with kids or a special interest in military history, but it’s still an interesting stop for anyone. You don’t have to be a historian to appreciate the sheer scale and size of American battleships and to admire that this massive ship was made by human hands. If you’re a kid, this is an epic playground of sorts, since the grounds are populated with fighter jets, tanks, and more.

“Famous battleship & museum from Under Siege”

At Mobile's Battleship Memorial Park, you don't have to look far to find heroes. From the Battleship USS Alabama to the Submarine USS Drum and over 25 aircraft, the spirit of military pride is here. History meets heroism......from World War II to Iraqi Freedom, at one of America’s finest military parks. Here at Battleship Memorial Park you’ll walk the decks of a mighty battleship. Go below in a World War II submarine. View cockpits of combat aircraft. You’ll also see tanks, a Vietnam River Patrol Boat, and a plane like the one flown by the Tuskegee Airmen. It’s all here, all waiting to be discovered by you! This ship was also featured in Under Siege, the cheesy 90's Steven Segal action movie!

Very interesting. Be prepared to do a lot of walking in the ship. There are 3 self-guided tours that take a minimum of 30 minutes each. You do a lot of stair climbing and they are very steep. Many areas of the ship, especially the further down you go, get very warm. There are many displays in the ship showing the history of the ship, the men that served on it and the war. A must see!

I have 2 boys ages 8 and 14 and they love love loved it (so did the adults). It's a must see if you are in the area. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and check Groupon for discounts -we got two for one.

We had a lot of fun. It gets really hot in the ship the deeper you go so I would like to go back during a cooler part of the year. I would plan for a full day.

Awesome park, highly recommend coming here. On the outside where you park there are Vietnam, Korea, and 9/11 memorials, several aircraft including a B52, and a side road that loops around with some tanks. Lots of details and plaques offering some interesting backstory and history on each individual item. Inside the park, the Battleship tour is self-guided, giving you the freedom to wander around as you wish and not lose track since you get a pamphlet that walks you though the tour routes through the ship. I'd recommend doing the yellow tour (ship exterior) before the red/green (interior) tours since the interior is fairly well air conditioned and gives you an opportunity to cool down after checking out the exterior. Check the pamphlet if you're wandering because if you're not paying attention you can miss some neat little areas on the ship. Then take a short walk to the Aircraft Pavilion and check out the planes and continue through to the USS Drum. Plan to spend a good 4+ hours to enjoy the park in full.

Only had an hour, but we toured the USS Drum and the Hanger. I have a young child (1.5) and this was perfect for him to go up and see all of the planes as well as looking around how the sub is. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a few hours to spend. (Not to mention the SR71 Blackbird out front, wow.)

While much of the historical significance was lost on my 5 year old, he still had a good deal of fun exploring the battleship and submarine. He wanted to checkout every tank and artillery gun but breezed through the hanger with the Jets and helicopters - go figure.

The tour inside the ship was awesome and the displays will make you feel back in time. The tour guide was also fantastic. Me and my brother and dad really enjoyed here.

Great for Military Buffs, not great for Pregnant women or arthritis. There's a lot of neat airplanes and the Drum (submarine) was really cool. Great for older kids, my eight year old says it was awesome and fun.

The 45,000-ton USS Battleship Alabama sailed the North Atlantic and the South Pacific during her three-year tenure during World War II. She was home to a crew of 2,500 brave American soldiers. She’s been nicknamed “Mighty A” or the “Heroine of the Pacific.” She ended up in Mobile, Alabama, as a National Historic Landmark and memorial to millions.
