“Modesto's only original Victorian home”
The McHenry Mansion is Modesto's Treasure. It is the city's only original Victorian home and one of the few remaining reminders of the town's rich heritage. Its restoration has proved to be the community's most visible, extended renovation project. Thousands of local citizens have participated and contributed to the restoration. A typical day at the McHenry Mansion may include a group tour for a busload of school children in the morning, docent-conducted tours for a hundred people in the afternoon, and an elegant private party in the evening. The Mansion is used by the community almost every day, with an average of 20,000 annual visitors. The house tours are only possible because of the dedication of a large group of docent volunteers who serve as guides. In addition to free tours the mansion is often used for special occasion celebrations as weddings, teas, dinners, receptions, birthdays, anniversaries etc. It is the site of official entertaining by the City of Modesto, as well as by service clubs, groups, organizations and individuals. In the past it has hosted arts and crafts exhibits, a Smithsonian Victorian Garden exhibit, Victorian Silver exhibit, Victorian “Floral Extravaganza” and a Victorian fashion show among many other events. In 2008, a “125th Anniversary Party” for the mansion was well attended by the public. It continues public festivities with a variety of annual teas, a St. Patrick’s Day Pub night, Christmas party, the Table Setting Event, Fourth of July celebration, Candlelight Tours, and the Dickens Faire.
