Ended up here on accident on a long road trip. The campsite I'd planned to use in Guadalupe Mountains Nat'l Park was full. The campsite is well maintained and includes showers which was incredibly welcome after such a long camping trip.
The visitor's center has snow discs you can rent to go sliding down the dunes. Gives you an opportunity to let out your inner child! There's also a great deal of wildlife tracks out in the dunes if you look for them with birds, raccoons, kangaroo rats and fox tracks to name a few. Overall, a pretty good time.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD YOU VENTURE OUT ONTO THE DUNES IN THE SPECIAL LEVEL OF HELL THAT IS TEXAS SUMMER
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!!

What a fun stop this was! We've toured other sand dune areas, and always dreamt of sleeping amongst them. Monahans Sandhills SP is part of an active and large sand dune in west Texas, and the campground is right amongst them!
Step right outside your door.. and go PLAY! We had a blast here climbing and sliding. However, when the winds kick up, it's not as much fun (we had a whole day of 30-50mph winds).
As part of an active sand dune, the sand shifts quite a bit. Certain campsites can be completely covered over - so availability can vary a bit here.
Also, be careful with any electronics you take outside here.. the pictures we've posted here are the last of this camera. The sand got all inside the lens and now it won't open.
We really enjoyed it here, but 1 or 2 nights was enough for us. Only so much getting sandy one should endure. But definitely worth a stop should you be passing through this area. Easy on/off from I-20 just west of Odessa/Midland and a great escape from all the oil field activity in the area.

Monahans was the last stop on our 8 day camping tour of the Big Bend. After 4 days without a shower we were very much looking forward to a clean up and Monahans did not disappoint! We arrived late in the afternoon, just in time to check in and rent some sand disks (before 3pm). We walked their very short interpretive trail and headed for the dunes. Call me old but climbing up dunes and sliding down is not easy!! It was however a lot of fun, even though two slides was enough for me! Sunset on the dunes is beautiful, as is sunrise. The rv spots are basically asphalt pull throughs and not much to look at, except for the fact that the dunes are right there. There is a bbq and shade structure w picnic table. Be careful and park strictly on the road, a guy got stuck in the sand and had to get towed, and dirty looks from the Ranger. In the morning it was fun to walk the perimeter of the dune right outside and see the multitude of tiny tracks, and in such variety. All the critters come out at night when it is cooler. The visitor center has a nice exhibit, like a mini museum, that explains sand, dunes, plants and desert critters. Altogether a very nice stop.

First, the $15 includes electricity and water. Since we have an annual Texas Park Pass ($70) we did not have to pay an entrance fee or any additional fees.
White soft sand just puts me in my happy place. Keep expecting to see blue water but just more sand.
Each spot includes a covered picnic area and BBQ grill. During our couple of nights there were only a couple of other campers.
We're here in late October. Day time temperature hit 90. Night time high 50's.
You can rent a sand saucer at the welcome station. It was a blast sliding down the dunes.
Great spot for a couple of days. Cell service was weak but booster made it useable.

Great spot to bounce through for one night on way to Big Bend. Will cost a bit more per adult ($4) if you don't have Tx park pass. Sand hills are fun. Not sure what you would do here for more than one day. Pretty basic. Quiet and clean. They have shaded picnic shelters. Still, be ready for lots of sun.

We had a site right next to the sand dunes where our kids could go sledding. The sunsets and sunrises were both so beautiful. They rent or sell sleds at the Visitor Center where you check-in. We were staying for 5 days so it made more sense to buy than rent. There are not very many big rig sites, but the site we were in was good. We were in site 9 and we have a 41 foot 5th wheel. Verizon coverage was good.

When checking in, the ranger looked at me like I was crazy when she realized we had 7 day reservation, after a few days I realized why.
We enjoyed the sand dunes for a couple of days, but there were several days where the wind was gusting up to 50+ mph, and it never stopped blowing. Every crack and crevice in the RV and our truck was filled with sand, and our picnick table started disappearing into the sand by the end of the week.
Nice place to stop for a night or two, but not a great park for our travel style of staying a week at a time.
Overall the facilities here are a bit on the run down side, but I'd guess that it's due to the remote location, and lack of visitors.
One small grocery store, and a couple of OK restaurants in town, but not much out here.

This place is really cool! On our way to big bend and we happened across this place and are so glad we stopped for two nights. Amazing dunes and animals/tracks. Sunsets and sunrises to die for. Super cheap ($14/night) for water and electric hookups, dump station at entrance to the park made it easy to dump on the way out. The sites were either pull through or back in and easy, mostly level and paved. Showers were decent and clean. Our dog (and us) had a blast running through the dunes. You can also rent sleds to ride the dunes. It's a really cool place that you'd never know was here and it's just off the highway!! I'm sure it's a little rough on a windy day though and the wifi/cell service is minimal, but for an overnight or two it's pretty great!
