Situated in the Willamette Valley on the Long Tom River, Hard Times Distillery inhabits an old granary in downtown Monroe, Oregon (pop 680), halfway between Eugene and Corvallis. The building sat empty for about nine years before we finally found it, after a long search through Springfield, Eugene, Junction City and Harrisburg. Monroe embraced us, and we’ve been happily cooking in the ugliest building in town ever since. What you will notice on a tour at Hard Times is that there are not a lot of slick, machine-made surfaces. Dudley and James built everything themselves. The production stills were built by hand, and the fermentation process was developed over time through a lightbulb-like quest for a vodka that made us smile. We currently have two pot stills and four vodka columns. Our fermentation process handles about 1200 gallons at a turn.
