“preserving Piatt County heritage”
The museum was organized in 1965 as “The Piatt County Pioneers.” The name was changed later that year to “The Illinois Pioneer Heritage Center.” In 1996, the museum was reorganized and the name changed to “The Piatt County Museum.” Our mission is to preserve Piatt County heritage by deepening our knowledge of the past and achieving public appreciation of the value history brings to our lives. The museum will serve as an educational center for school children and adults; will encourage tourism in Piatt County; and, will establish a place where appreciation of the county’s heritage can be observed and experienced by not only those in Central Illinois but by the many visitors who are drawn to this historical area each year. Our goal is to have a new facility which is environmentally controlled in a highly visible area where the artifacts from the original museum buildings will be brought together, properly stored, and carefully prepared for presentation.
