“Two Entrances- This is South Rim”
There is no bridge across the canyon. Allow 2 to 3 hours to drive from one rim to the other. The North Rim is 11 miles southwest of Crawford. From CO Highway 92, turn west on Black Canyon Road approximately 3 miles south of Crawford. The physical/GPS address is 7295 Black Canyon Road, Crawford. Follow the road signs to the park. The last 7 miles are unpaved. The North Rim is closed to vehicles in the winter. Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. It has trails for all abilities are available on both South and North Rims.
So the main picture is deceiving. 😆 We came here to check out the views. We didn't camp or rock climb and were not hikers. LOL Only 20 people are allowed INSIDE the canyon a day. This is a drive around the road, stop at the pull offs and see the beautiful views from above. There are some hiking paths to follow to the overlooks and the map they give you tells you how far each hike is. Absolutely beautiful though and definitely worth it! 😍
Awesome place. Deer in the campgrounds, views of the river below made me stay an extra night. Great hike down, lunch on a river rock and a tiring but really fun hike back up.
The 102 Elk Creek address is actually for the Elk Creek campground. Camp host directed me to Black Canyon which is 41 miles west to CO Highway 347.
Best place of the trip!
An incredible place off the beaten path. Great spot if you are looking to rock climb or if you just want to camp and hike. Beautiful.
Amazing, pictures cannot describe. Easy in and out if your time is limited as ours was; visit the gift shop and take a peek off the observation deck; wowza!
What an awesome canyon, not to be missed!!
Colorado is filled with amazing things to do, and here you get a chance to observe some of the oldest rocks and hiking trails! It's truly amazing and one of our top things to do in the state.
For sure a hidden gem! I’m surprised this park isn’t very well known, it was one of my favorite places we stopped during our road trip! The canyon is beautiful and you can get fairly close to the edge because of the way they did the hiking trails. Would go back in a second to camp there if I lived a little closer.
WOW!!!! Everyone should see this! The views are amazing! The canyon is stunning!
Recently named an official International Dark Sky Park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison is surrounded by miles of vast open spaces. Far enough from cities but close enough for easy access, this park’s perfectly situated for some serious stargazing in Colorado.
Beautiful and some interestingly difficult terrain.
