Wally's Service

The station was an original working service station that was built in 1937 and operated as a Gulf and also as an Esso station until the late 70's to 80's.  It was a working station on South Main Street when Andy Griffith was a young boy growing up.  It was told that when he was a lad, that he would walk from his house to South Main Street, which was a fairly short distance from his home, and visit the service stations there.  He could have very well got a snack or a bottle of pop, who knows? The station was acquired in the 90's and was re-opened as a gift shop in 2001 when The Fruit Basket moved in operating a specialized gift basket business.  Shortly after moving in, Squad Car Tours teamed up with the station and started their business our of the same building.  The shop now operates as Wally's Service Station, The Fruit Basket, and Squad Car Tours which offers tours around town and gives a brief history of the town along with the sites of "Mayberry" as the story goes. The shop is open 6 days a week except during the Winter Months of which is open 4 days a week, Mon, Thur, Fri & Sat between January & April.  We look forward to seeing you visit our "quaint little shop" and share our stories with you.  Please join us during Mayberry Days and Autumn Leaves Festival for the upcoming large events.  You may see some of the characters or "look-a-likes" and join in the parade downtown for Mayberry Days on Sat.
