“One of the most photographed glaciers in the park”

Length: 10.3 miles Trailhead: Follow the Many Glacier Road straight ahead until you see clearly marked signs for the Grinnell Glacier Trail. (Boat rides across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine can shorten the hike to about 7 miles. Please note that there is a fee to ride the two boats.) The first two miles follow the north shores of Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine. Then the trail gains elevation with views of Grinnell Falls, Angel Wing, Mt. Gould, the Continental Divide and Grinnell Lake. To view the glaciers and Upper Grinnell Lake, make sure you follow the trail up and over the rocky moraine beyond the picnic area.

This hike is beautiful and worth the effort! It starts out pretty flat as you walk along the lake. The second half is up, up, up. You gain over 1800 feet but it is well worth it! The views on the hike are spectacular. Then when you come around the corner to see the Glacier it is amazing. When we went - in late August there were icebergs floating in the lake. It was quite the site to see! We did the hike with our 11,9,9 and 7 year olds and it was tough but their excitement once we reached the glacier was awesome to hear.

This was a strenuous hike but oh soooo worth it. If you’re not in very good shape just take breaks. The view is incredible and unlike any I’ve ever seen. The glaciers are so beautiful and we were able to eat lunch at grinnell glacier right by the waters edge. We did it at 830 in the morning when it was raining. It stopped about an hour in but we didn’t see very many people until we got to the top. We were rerouted due to grizzly activity so it was 13.5 miles but every step was worth it.
